Note to Finger in the Dike
“Envoy Reaches Out to Beijing For Taiwanese; American Scienist’s Unofficial Visit Coincides with Policy Debate in China,” Washington Post, March 31, 2000. He quoted a Chinese source as saying I was an “unofficial representative” of Taiwan but also quoted Hsiao Bi-khim as saying, “It’s not like we’ve asked him to carry a message for us.... What we’re trying to do is to find ways to communicate.” It then said: “Whatever his status...” and went on. The article also claimed that I and Lee Yuan Tseh had been “friends for years”–which was false—and that Lee had “played a role” in encouraging me to “make this trip”—also false.
